The Truth About Fat Loss

The fitness industry is saturated with so much information that with one click of a button we can access a wide array of information that can help us improve our health and wellness.  But is the information misleading? From a nutritional standpoint, we were told that taking the skin off the chicken was a necessity.  We had to drink low fat or skim milk.  You had to swap out butter for margarine. Low sodium this and low sodium that, etc. Now in terms of exercise, doing some form of cardio such as running on the treadmill, the elliptical, or even participating in zumba was and still is the ever-growing epidemic that people seem to gravitate to.  The truth is that the fitness industry is saturated with so much misleading information, and as a result we become victims of paralysis by analysis.

This took me quite awhile to get so I’m saving you a whole lot of time.  If you’re predominantly eating processed foods and/or drinks,  your body will be too busy detoxifying all that crap you eat rather than metabolizing it and using it for energy.  Make sense right? Another perfect example would be your skin.  Your skin is a by-product of what you ingest and it’s the membrane that our body pushes toxins out of so think about it… If you spend most days eating junk and you overwhelm your digestive system it’s going to cause a back up.  With an overwhelmed digestive system your skin will be riddled with acne, it can cause horrendous body odor and yeah it’s not going to look friendly.  Like I always tell my clients, “drink lots of water and eat high quality foods.”

“PHYSICAL FITNESS IS NOT ONLY OF THE MOST IMPORTANT KEYS TO A HEALTHY BODY, IT IS THE BASIS OF DYNAMIC AND CREATIVE INTELLECTUAL ACTIVITY.”- John F. Kennedy

With regard to exercise and movement, my biggest pet peeve was the perception that you could lose weight by running everyday and lifting light loads with a lot of repetitions. Now this pertains more to women, but make no mistake that I have experienced it with men as well.  That’s not going to cut it and neither will the occasional pizza and beer on top of that every weekend. Ultimately, the determining factor that will aid in fat loss is to build muscle.  At the end of the day you have to continually provide a stimulus to your body.  Granted everybody has their unique genetic make up but regardless- lifting heavy objects will maximize fat loss.  It’s the way to go.  The more muscle you build, the higher your metabolism rises.  When your metabolism sky rockets, guess what? You’re burning calories at a higher rate.  Also your appetite becomes insatiable.  Okay not insatiable, but it’s how I feel most of the time but I digress.
